Get Involved! The Superhero Run for National AIDS Trust

The Superhero Run, which takes place on Sunday 14 May in Regent’s Park, may be in its eighth year but this year will be the first that Superhero runners are supporting the National AIDS Trust. NAT’s Fundraising Officer Ollie Nicholls explains how you can take part.

On Sunday 14 May you can join the NAT team of HIV heroes for the annual Superhero Run in Regent’s Park. You can run, jog or walk the route, which comes in two levels – either 5k or 10k – so it really is suitable for everyone.

NAT champions the rights of people living with HIV and campaigns for change. There’s no better time to support NAT. Last year, when the NHS refused to make a drug that can prevent HIV (PrEP) available, we took it to court and won – twice! Also in the last year alone, we’ve fought for every child in every school to learn about HIV, same-sex relationships and gender identity, and won that too! We challenge every stigmatising media story about HIV, and we’re fighting cuts to vital HIV support services nationwide.

But the fight to end HIV and HIV discrimination is not over. We have a packed agenda for the coming year: we’ll be holding the NHS to account to make sure they deliver on their PrEP promises. We’ll be standing up for older people living with HIV – making sure their carers treat them right. We’ll be making sure the Government doesn’t use religion as a reason to prevent LGBT young people getting sex and relationships in schools, and we’ll continue to make sure we correct challenging media coverage which misinforms the public and generates stigma.

Bonnie Tyler was only holding out for one hero, but NAT are holding out for a whole team of superheroes to raise funds that will support our vital policy work, to halt the spread of HIV and to ensure that people living with HIV can live well. Please be one of them!

Now in its eighth year, the Superhero Run is getting bigger and better. We ask for a £15 registration fee when you join our team. After that, there’s a sponsorship goal of £150. We’ll be on hand every step of the way with help and support for raising the money. You’ll be running alongside over 2,000 superhero fundraisers in the beautiful Regent’s Park – hopefully with a bit of early summer sun – and we’ll also be on hand on the day to cheer you over the finish line.

On top of all this, you’ll be provided with a free costume, which you can customise into your own superhero creation, or you can come up with your own look inspired by classic superheroes.

So whether you fancy yourself as a sultry Batman, athletic Superman, one of the X-Men, an all-out Wonder Woman or some stunning personalised creation of your own, you’ll feel right at home in the Superhero Run.

This will be our first year with Superhero runners (and joggers and walkers) supporting us. As part of the inaugural NAT team, you can look forward to a sense of camaraderie on the day, as well as the sense of achievement in having raised money that will fight for the rights of those living with and affected by HIV.

To get involved, please email our [email protected] by 1 May.
