Restaurant review: Wagamama by Stephen Vowles

There’s a new Wagamama in town and it offers much more than just noodles, as Boyz restaurant reviewer Stephen Vowles discovers.

There are a lot of great eating places on Dean Street in London’s Soho and with the arrival of a branch of Wagamama now also on the street – at 81 to be precise – the chain makes a very welcome addition to the street.

The menu at Wagamama is, to put it simply, delicious. If you are trying Japanese cuisine for the first time or are a seasoned consumer, Wagamama never disappoints. To accompany the food, Meantime craft beers have exclusively launched their Kansho and Kikku pale ales.

Opting for the short rib and grilled duck donburi ramens from the Omakase selection for our mains, these chef’s special dishes fresh from the kitchen came as very generous portions and would satisfy most appetites. Partnering those dishes, sides we chose included steamed buns (pork belly and panko apple along with mixed mushroom and panko aubergine), chilli squid and chicken gyoza. All were divine.

I must confess it would be difficult for me to not enjoy a glass of rose wine with my food and I found it to be a fantastic complement to the Japanese cuisine before us. Fresh juices are also available, with the Clean Green (kiwi, avocado and apple) refreshing and palate cleansing.

New desserts have been introduced too; the chocolate layer cake is very moreish while the yuzu and lemon tart with raspberry
compote offers a perfect balance of sweet and sour.

Wagamama Dean Street is open Monday to Saturday from 11am until 11pm, and Sunday from 11am until 10pm. Booking is advisable via the website for six or more guests and with a very spacious downstairs bar that also offers extra seating this new addition is well worth a visit.
