Me, Myself and I: Peppermint

The New York City-based performer and RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 9 contestant loves candy and wants to meet the Spice Girls. You can see her this Saturday (27 May) at XXL Bear Pride.

Where are you from originally?

I was born in Hershey, Pennsylvania, right next to a chocolate factory.

And where do you live now?

Now I live with the sexy model in Harlem, New York City. Right next to a chocolate factory!

Where do you stay when you visit London and why?

Usually the boys from XXL put me up in a swanky hotel in Southwark.

When did you last visit London and what did you do when you were here?

It was for Bear Pride last year.

Apart from your XXL show, what else do you hope to do when you visit this time round?

I want to go see the Crown Jewels and meet the Spice Girls.

What do you love about London and why?

London is like my home away from home. It’s the first international city I ever travelled to and I’ve been several times since. I have many ex-boyfriends there too…

What was the first gay venue
you visited?

Rome nightclub in Delaware. It was wonderful. I was underage and I felt fabulous but I looked horrible.

Favourite club/bar/venue in London?

XXL of course! Especially since they are paying for my ticket.

What was the last theatre show you saw, where, and what did you think of it?

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Broadway in New York City. It was major! But I’m still reeling from seeing The View Upstairs the other day. It’s an LGBT story about community that’s very timely.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Candy.

Biggest extravagance?

Hair! I can’t get enough of it. I love it almost as much as candy.

Best gift you’ve ever received and why?

Years ago, an artist made a portrait of me. I couldn’t afford it at the time because it was over $500, but a customer bought it for me and I was so excited. It still hangs in my apartment.

What has been the highlight of your career so far and why?

Being able to travel the world and do what I love… which is eating candy!

If you could go back in time which year would you choose and why?

1998. That was a great year for hip hop. Plus I would be able to buy that dress in the window that I couldn’t afford back then.

Who are the most entertaining people you follow on Twitter?

@peppermint247, @peppermint247, @peppermint247.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Don’t take anyone else’s advice.

What’s the best party you’ve ever been to?

The Motherfucker party in NYC.

Where in the world would you like to visit before you die?

South America.

What is one thing you wish you knew when you were younger?

That I would be able to live life as a healthy, happy woman without having to risk too much.

Peppermint will perform at XXL Bear Pride this Saturday (27 May) from 9pm at Pulse, 1 Invicta Plaza, Blackfriars Bridge Road, London, SE1 9UF.
