Those funky boys from R & She are back at Heaven this Bank Holiday Sunday night following the runaway success of their first party there earlier in the year. This second bash, with it’s Queens of Hip Hop theme promises to be even better. Dave Cross caught up with founders and DJs Neil Prince and Q Boy to get the lowdown.
Hi guys, are you excited to be back at Heaven this Sunday?
Neil Prince: So excited! To do R & She on such a big scale is literally a dream come true.
QBoy: Yes definitely! Being a big main room event has always been
our goal.
How was the 5th Birthday Party there?
Neil Prince: It was so amazing. It exceeded all expectations. We had so much love from the audience, it was an incredible experience.
QBoy: Before even midnight our friends were coming in saying “you know the queue outside is all the way to The Strand?” and I couldn’t believe it. People just kept coming and coming. I knew we’d have a good party but it definitely surpassed my expectations on how many people came to celebrate with us.
For those who have never been to an R & She party before, how would you each sum them up?
QBoy: Sing-along R&B and hip-hop hits from all your favourite female artists including 90s classics to new bangers, with one of the friendliest happiest crowds in London.
Neil Prince: Yes, R & She is a total sing-along fest ! We love to hear the crowd sing!
You have a theme of Queens of Hip Hop? Can you each pick a track that best demonstrates the theme and that you are looking forward to playing on Sunday?
Neil Prince: Eve Who’s That Girl pretty much sums up the party in one and gets a massive response every time.
QBoy: We play both R&B and Hip Hop over three decades so it’s hard for me to just choose one track. We play everything from Aaliyah’s Back & Forth to Destiny’s Child’s Lose My Breath and Iggy Azalea’s Fancy to Stefflon Don’s 16 Shots.
Can you tell us about Room Two with Misty B?
QBoy: We were lucky enough to have Misty play for us last time, she sticks with the R & She theme of all-female artists but plays more afrobeats, soca, bashment and reggae.
Neil Prince: A number of people are into the more underground and edgier tracks in addition to the R&B and Hip Hop anthems, so having Misty with us makes sure we cover all bases. She’s a diamond!
And about the Karaoke lounge?
QBoy: Hahaha, it went very well, drunk people love to sing! Kris Webb, who usually does the door for us at our monthly East Bloc dates, will be hosting the karaoke this time – he is a singer himself so can throw down a few classics to get them started.
Neil Prince: Not that they needed much encouragement last time!
