Panto has to be performed in an OTT fashion, with huge gestures linked to slapstick delivery. In Beans, written by Matthew Floyd Jones, all this is so much in evidence in a sixty minute whirlwind of gag after gag delivered by a hugely talented cast. Most notably Michael Head as Lesley Longjohns who has mastered this art form completely. This is broad physical comedy expertly executed with a terrific energy. Jessica Brady as the Fairy and Giganticus, Roann McCloskey as Jacqueline Longjohns and Chazz Redhead in the dual role of Ivan Gregg and Hugo MacBean, all know how to deliver their banter expertly. There is a plot but that is really of no consequence as this panto is about four actors who are true clowns. Director Tim McArthur gets performances from his cast that are based in pantomime tradition where even the token fart gags, inclusion of current pop songs and the required audience participation are key to getting the job done. This is crude, rude and throughly entertaining with gold stars going to all concerned. A marvellous adult panto that is both charming and wonderfully risqué.
