Me, Myself and I: Jonathan Hewston 

 

Jonathan is the owner of the Rainbow Card, a brand new prepaid Mastercard aimed at the LGBT+ community. He has three dogs, a cat and a pygmy goat, was on Shipwrecked and is just a bit obsessed with The Real Housewives of – all of them!

Where are you from originally? 

I was born in Birmingham but grew up in Mallorca.

And where do you live now?

I live in Sutton Coldfield with my boyfriend Lewis, three dogs, a Bengal cat and a pygmy goat on the way.

What do you love about London and why? 

I love the diversity and freedom to be yourself.

What was the first gay venue you visited?

The first bar was the Dover Castle in Leicester, and I actually worked there for a while too.

Favourite club/bar/venue in London and why? 

I like Village Soho as there is a Village in Birmingham too, so it makes me feel at home.

In basic terms, what is the Rainbow Card? 

It’s a prepaid Mastercard that will save the bearer hundreds of pounds around the UK.

What was the last theatre show you saw, where, and what did you think of it? 

Billy Elliot and I loved it. I’m a massive theatre fan.

What is your guilty pleasure and why? 

The Real Housewives – any of the shows.

Biggest extravagance? 

My pets; I spend a fortune on them.

Best gift you’ve ever received and why? 

Anything Apple or Gucci, which are normally from my dad.

What has been the highlight of your career so far and why?

Launching the Rainbow Card.

If you could go back in time which year would you choose and why? 

When I was on Shipwrecked in 2008. It literally changed my life as I came out in TV.

What’s the best party you’ve ever been to and what made it so good? 

I arranged an end of the world party in 2012, it was amazing.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Manners cost nothing.

Who is your LGBT+ hero and why?

Alaska from RuPaul’s Drag Race – she’s amazing. I’m a big drag fan.

Who are the most entertaining people you follow on social media and why? 

Any drag queens or Real Housewives. As I said, I’m obsessed.

Where in the world would you like to visit before you die and why? 

The Maldives, before they disappear.

What is one thing you wish you knew when you were younger?

Not to care what people think and be proud of who you are.
