Margate Pride is this Saturday with the Pride Parade at 2pm

Margate Pride is this weekend

Margate Pride is a culture-rich and free entry Pride – a celebration of all Thanet’s queerness and LGBT+ life and a chance for everyone to enjoy our liberation. The Parade gathers on Saturday 11th August at Walpole Bay Hotel lawns from 1.30pm and sets off at 2pm, completing its march on the main sands seafront on Marine Drive at 3pm.

Speakers will include Sue Sanders (LGBT History month), Lady Phyll (UK Black Pride) and Charlie Craggs (writer My Trans Sisters), while the street party in the centre of Margate will see DJs, performers, live music from Rebecca Taylor, The Margate Super Group, Grace Shush (Miss Sink The Pink 2018) and the Margate Community Choir.

At 6pm Ana Matronic (above) will DJ her Dreamland Sunset Session, the Margate Arts Club takes over The Sundeck, and from 9pm until 3am Margate’s answer to Studio 54, Cockles and Muscles, is at the Lido Cliff Bar with DJs Alex Noble, Josh Caffe, Keziah and Synth System Systers. It’s your pre-Pride party at Sundowners

Thanet’s only LGBT+ bar, restaurant and club, Sundowners, kicks off Margate Pride with a series of live performances from Kelly Wilde and Jason Prince this Friday (10 Aug). They’ll be showcasing their new single This Heaven plus there’ll be huge party anthems and commercial pop hits blasting out through the speakers until a cool 3am. Entry is free all night too – wahoo!

Sundowners’ Margate Pride daytime line up

For Margate Pride day Sundowners will be having acts on outside and upstairs from 1.30pm, and it’s all hosted by the one and only Miss Jason. The afternoon’s entertainment is free and includes names such as Misty Lee, Sir Vyx, Son of a Tutu, Victoria Carriage, Shady JD, Eva Iglesias and Topsie Redfern. Only a limited number of people are allowed on the terrace, however, due to licensing, so be sure to arrive early and claim your spot.

Keep the Pride party going at Sundowners

Margate Pride continues well into the night at Sundowners with an action-packed line up of evening entertainment from 7pm. Tickets are £5 in advance or £8 on the door and names on the line up include Drag With No Name, Vivienne Lynsey, Rose Garden, Eva Iglesias, Mary Mac, Baga Chipz, Linda Bacardi and Stephanie Von Clitz, while Miss Jason attempts to keep things in some sort of order. Buy that girl a drink, we say!

A date with Jade at The Yard Coventry

The Yard in Coventry’s Friday night roster of August acts hots up even more this weekend when Jade Justine hits the stage for a full on fab show on Friday (10 Aug). This award-winning bar – The Yard was voted Best New Bar, and Best Bar and Best Nightclub outside Birmingham in the Midlands Zone Readers Awards earlier this year – is one of the best places we know to start your weekend in style, and with live entertainment from JJ this one looks set to be a belter.

See a screening of Before Stonewall

With next year marking the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, it serves as a timely reminder to add some historical perspective to what life was like for the LGBT community before 1969. Before Stonewall, the seminal documentary by Greta Schiller and Robert Rosenberg, is back in cinemas across the country in a newly-restored version over the summer, offering invaluable insight into how people lived and loved in America prior to that momentous event.

Narrated by Rita Mae Brown, it features archive footage, movie clips and a wealth of personal accounts, including from Allen Ginsberg, Lisa Ben and Evelyn Hooker that prove to be both funny and moving. See it at Filmhouse Edinburgh (12 Aug); Eden Court, Inverness (13 Aug); Regent Street Cinema, London (15 Aug); Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle (16 Aug); Dundee Contemporary Arts (24 Aug); and GFT, Glasgow (29 Aug).
