Grindr: The Opera at Above The Stag – Gala Night review by Stephen Vowles

In true theatrical tradition last night (18th January) saw the current lead in Grindr: The Opera, usually played by an excellent Christian Lunn, unable to perform so in stepped a tremendous Tom Blackmore, who although reading off book, was sensational. His portrayal of Grindr as a demigod was superb. Think of a mash up between Faust and Lady Gaga and you have it. His fellow cast members Ryan Anderson, David Malcolm, Tom Mann, Dereck Walker and and lastly William Spencer are also mesmerising to watch. Their combined vocal range showcased Erik Ransom’s book, music and lyrics to a very high standard. The construction of the music is totally delicious with Ransom blending in the rhythm, melodies and phrasing of popular styles and parodying everyone from the Village People’s YMCA to Gilbert and Sullivan. Directed with great panache by Andrew Beckett, this is a must see performance where the power and effect of using social media, its pitfalls and perils, is told with enticing and alluring use of song, dance and comedy. A fabulous and hugely entertaining show made even more stunning by Tom Blackmore giving it his all – and the current run is now with a new song and content. Very memorable!
