See & Scene: Brighton Pride, Above The Stag, The RVT, Boyz Awards and more

Brighton Pride confirms headliners

The team at Brighton Pride have confirmed four of their headliners for this year’s Party in the Park on Saturday 3 August and LoveBN1 on Sunday 4 August both in Preston Park. All these acts are performing full shows of at least an hour and… drum roll… on Saturday you can see none other than our favourite golden girl, it’s only blinkin’ Kylie, do we really need to tell you how gorgeous and special this will be. Plus as if that wasn’t enough there’s also a live show from Clean Bandit, with hits such as Ratherbe, Rockabye, Solo and more. On Sunday it’s LoveBN1 also in Preston Park, which was debuted last year and proved very popular. This year 

they have the amazing Jessie J, with hits such as Bang Bang, Starships, Price Tag and more plus the total legend that is Miss Grace Jones. Grace is one the world’s most extraordinary live acts with classics such as Pull Up To The Bumper, Private Life, Slave to the Rhythm and more. Grindr is back at Above The Stag

Grindr The Opera is the sensational musical… it’s not actually an opera, that wowed us last year and it’s back for a limited run at the Boyz Award-winning Above The Stag Theatre in Vauxhall. Get your tickets at abovethestag.com

Fanny at The Yard

Those of a delicate disposition should probably avoid The Yard in Coventry on Friday (8 Feb) as Drag Idol finalist, the always hilarious and often shocking Fanny Burns will be on stage and taking no prisoners.

Cabaret at the G&D

There’s another stonker of a weekend at the George and Dragon in Greenwich, just look at this line-up; Thursday (7 Feb) it’s Tanya Hyde, Friday Boyz Award-winning KY Kelly, Saturday the marvellous Titti La Camp and on Sunday you get Miss Jason, Tanya and Tony Sinclair. Wowza.

Not now in the Boyz Awards 2019

OK kids, stuff is getting serious, we are now in the last week of voting in this year’s Boyz Awards. The voting closes at midnight on Tuesday (12 Feb) and the winners will be announced at a special party on Thursday 21 February at the Two Brewers. There’s many categories and some of the biggest relate to the scene: Best Cabaret Venue, Best Bar, Best Bar Staff plus of course Best Cabaret and Best New Cabaret Act. Fierce Cabaret Fundraiser at The RVT

This Thursday (7 Feb) there’s a very special fundraising event at The Royal Vauxhall Tavern with some truly fantastic acts helping to raise money in aid of The MaxJohnson Project. Last November British Drag King Max Ryder and American Drag King Hugh Johnson were hit by another car whilst travelling in America on tour. Both suffered severe injuries and are lucky to be alive, but both are in desperate need of financial help, neither can work and that’s what this night is for. Gently Down The Stream

Gently Down The Stream the new play from Martin Sherman, writer of Bent, gets its debut at the Park Theatre from Wednesday (13 Feb). This passionate play tells the story of two gay men of different ages and different backgrounds coming together and through this, it explores and reveals the journey of gay history and celebrates the men and women who led the way for equality, marriage and the right to dream. If you haven’t experienced Will You Be There Darling? Then this Saturday (9 Feb) is your chance as it’s back at The Grand in Clapham. And The Rest of me Floats

Using pop music, movement and more, And the Rest of Me Floats is a thought-provoking production with a diverse set of performers from the trans, non-binary and queer communities exploring how it feels to be seen as not ‘normal’ in society. Queersay is back at The Brewers

On Thursday (7 Feb) the team from open discussion forum Queersay are back at The Two Brewers. Speakers will include Lady Phyll from UK Black Pride, Asifa Lahore and Catia Ciarico, who books acts and produces shows at The RVT. The event is hosted by Boyz’ own Dave Cross and tickets are just £6 from queersay.community.

Sparkle at Sundowners

On Saturday night (9 Feb) there will be even more sparkle than usual at Sundowners in Margate. But it’s not down to an overdose of glitter it’s because the brilliant Davina Sparkle will be on stage at 11pm for cabaret shenanigans.

Valentine’s bingo at The Bridge

Next Thursday (14 Feb) is Valentine’s Day and the team at The Bridge in Clapham have a special loved up version of their brilliant Drag Bingo. Topsie Redfern and David Robson are in charge and we suggest you reserve your table now for what will be a night of laughs, romance and (bingo) balls!

CJ’s Piano Bar at White Swan 

If you love to belt out some classic tunes to a live pianist then we recommend this Thursday (7 Feb) and every Thursday a trip to Limehouse where you will find the marvellous CJ tickling the ivories and all singers are welcome.

Lilies and Sweets
