Me, myself and I: Phatt Matt

Phatt Matt is a popular DJ on the scene at The Victoria and Old Ship, and is releasing his new single I’ve Been Working. He’s a massive fan of Queen and would love to time travel to the clubbing 90s.

Where are you from originally?

London born and bred

And where do you live now?

I am currently living in Barbican in Central London with a group of friends, and we have two dogs Tyson and Bowie.

What do you love about London and why?

I love London because it’s a diverse and multicultural city that has a fantastic LGBT+ community, and it also has so many great opportunities.

What was the first gay venue you visited?

The first gay venue I visited was Bar 68 which was in Thornton Heath near Croydon. I remember it well as everyone there was like a little family, it was also where I learned to mix on the decks.

Where can we hear you DJing on a regular basis?

You can hear me DJ every Saturday night at The Victoria in Walthamstow and every Sunday I host the cabaret at the Old Ship in Limehouse.

What can you tell us about your new single?

My new single is a dance/house cover version of the classic hit single Working My Way Back To You which was first released in 1979 by the Detroit Spinners. I have also done a music video which I’m excited for you all to see, and we have two great people starring in the video, our Conner and Natalya. I have been working with a great team of people at Anxy media which is owned by my best mate Martyn Coleman.

What was the last theatre show you saw?

The last show I saw was We Will Rock You at the Dominion Theatre a few years ago, but it was a terrific show, and I am a massive Queen fan.

What is your guilty pleasure and why?

It would have to be listening to cheesy 80s music and 90s boybands, and I’m also a bit of a Glee geek LOL!

Biggest extravagance?

I once went on a pub crawl which started in London, and we ended up making our way to Manchester and Leicester it was fair to say things got a little bit crazy.

What has been the highlight of your career so far and why?

It would have to be DJing at Pasha nightclub in London, I was on the main room, and the atmosphere was amazing, and it was one of the best sets I have ever played.

If you could go back in time which year would you choose and why?

I would go back to the 90s to experience the club scene then as I love my club classics.

What’s the best party you’ve ever been to and what made it so good?

It was the Klubkidz parties as they always had amazing singers and performers and a great atmosphere also I have been a long time friend of Jason Prince who always looked after me.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

To just to be yourself.

Who is your LGBT+ hero and why?

George Michael as he did a lot of charity work and was a fantastic artist.

Who are the most entertaining people you follow on social media and why?

I watch a lot of Youtubers such as Caspar Lee and Lad Baby who got the Christmas number singing Sausage Rolls.

Where in the world would you like to visit before you die and why?

United States and in particularly Hollywood as I heard it’s where everything happens.

What is one thing you wish you knew when you were younger?

Not to take things too seriously and to heart, because times change and things move on.
