We Wish You a Myra Christmas at The Soho Theatre: Review by Dave Cross

A Christmas show in May? The festive theme is the hook that writer and performer Gareth Joyner and his muse Myra DuBois, (off the telly etc), hang his razor sharp stand up comedy on, much to the delight of the packed audience at the Soho Theatre.

We Wish You a Myra Christmas is an hour of focused and constantly funny character stand up, switching effortlessly between light speed quips, delusional musings and chaotic interaction with the audience. The Christmas theme is the perfect excuse for a glimpse into Myra’s dysfunctional family and her recent experiences in panto, which lead to her thoughts on being vegan and somehow inevitably on to what it would be like to eat Stephen Hawkins. Throughout the show Myra ‘involves’ her audience, but this is not just picking on people, there’s genuine skill and no real malice in the comedy she mines from audience participation, especially during a hilarious and manic version of 12 Days of Christmas.

The show is a marvellous and very funny showcase for an act that is clearly on the cusp of breaking out of the LGBT cabaret scene to a wider world of comedy. get a ticket while you can. Dave Cross
