It’s official, June is the start of pride season and although the main day of Pride in London is the first week in July, there’s already a huge amount of official events covering every imaginable LGBTQI+ area. Here’s a quick look at a tiny fraction of what’s on offer, plus key info for the big day of Pride in London’s Jubilee of 50 years since Stonewall.
Pride Pop Up Shop
Open now until 12 July
This year’s official Pride in London Pop Up Shop is now open at 53 Neal Street near Seven Dials in Covent Garden. The shop is presented in collaboration with the ‘Queen of Shops’, Mary Portas and it sells the new range of official Pride in London merchandise including clothing, flags and tote bags representing all communities – as well as the first ever bisexual and transgender flag face paints. Neal Street will also be transformed into a hub of colour with a public work of art installation, a rainbow of curated bollards celebrating the pride flag and colours all tying in with the Jubilee theme.
The Pride Festival
If you head to the PrideinLondon.org website you will find nearly 200 events linked to this year’s Pride. Many of them tie in with this year’s Jubilee theme, marking 50 years since the Stonewall Riots in New York. Here’s just a few of the events you can find on the website: a talk about Stonewall, karaoke, stand up comedy, the Gay Men’s Chorus, film screenings, theatre performances, life drawing class, Trans* in technology with Microsoft, lesbian speed-dating, LGBT+ adoption information meeting, socials and bar crawls, cabaret and music shows, LGBT+ history, bike rides, self defence, the Pink Singers, Pride Jubilee at the Science Museum, Queer Question Time, Carmen, Pride Quiz, LGBT+ and faith, board games day, Drag in Soho, V&A LGBTQ tour, Pride Picnic, Gala Dinner and much much more.
Parade Day
Saturday 6 July, from midday
Saturday 6 July is the big day, when Pride in London takes over huge amounts of our capital city. It kicks off with The Parade starting at Portland Place at midday, via Oxford Circus and Regent Street to Piccadilly Circus, and passing Trafalgar Square before finishing on Whitehall. Get there early for a good spot and avoid the mega popular areas. In the afternoon there’s a set of fantastic stages across the West End including Trafalgar Square which will be packed with a mix of exclusive performances and speeches covering everything from politics to pop and back again. Plus there’s more stages including the Cabaret, and Women’s Stages plus for the first time the World Stage along with all your favourite LGBT+ venues partying like no other day.
