Meet the Drag Idol 2019 fantastic four

It’s finally here… After two months of heats in 18 LGBT+ venues across the country, this Friday (28 Jun) is the Drag Idol Grand Final 2019 hosted by Danny Beard at the Two Brewers. We gathered together this year’s four finalists and asked them to introduce themselves and to tell us about their Drag Idol adventure.

Poppycock

The Two Brewers

“ When I first started I thought Poppycock was going to be this kind of dark character, but in the past year she’s just evolved into this bumbling idiot, who likes to show off. She does lots of singing and dancing, she does musical theatre, but she also loves some 80s rock, so when I do a full hour, you get some Heart or Pat Benatar as well. Drag Idol has pushed me to up my game and I’m thrilled to be representing the Two Brewers, the home venue… No pressure.”

Scott Lund

Via Manchester

“Scott is basically everybody’s drunk Scottish uncle at a party, trying to have a go at everyone and everything. On stage, he sings he dances and he prats around. I’ve only been doing this for a year, but I’ve loved every bit and everything else is kind of on the back burner. My Drag Idol journey has been pretty great, I’ve met a lot of lovely people with different opinions and I’ve been able to consider all those and find some common ground… including the ones who say ‘I don’t like drag kings, but you’re great’. Despite that, I would say to any drag kings or non binary performers out there, enter next year, it’s the only way to change things.”

Karla Bear

Halfway II Heaven

“Karla is the Australian girl next door that you never want your parents to meet. She’s lovabale, enticing, sexy, but loaded with a whole heap of baggage which we explore during the act, by trying to find out whey she’s eternally dateless and single. She sings all kinds of stuff, Disney, pop and even opera and cuts between them. As a boy I was in Kinky Boots and that really got me into drag. Drag Idol has been super fun and Halfway II Heaven are just brilliant, so supportive. It’s genuinely a family.”

#Joe

Central Station, King’s Cross

“#Joe – the # is silent by the way – is a drag twink, who is actually a dom top, is always on Grindr messaging his daddies, and one day hopes to grow to be a bear. He writes his own songs, plays keyboards and likes numbers and yams. I’ve really loved Drag Idol this year, it’s been a great experience and Central Station is a lovely venue to represent.”
