See and Scene: The RVT, Ku Bar, Rupert Street, Go West, Halfway and more

As always there’s a gloriously mixed selection box of treats at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern this week. Thursday (27 Jun) is Penguin Pride, a night of awe-inspiring writers, poets and activists performing on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. On Friday night it’s those crazy pop bananas from Push The Button with I Don’t Know Her, a tribute and celebration of the Glitter queen, Mariah Carey. Of course on Saturday it’s the marvellous Duckie while on Sunday your Queen of Cabaret is TV princess Myra DuBois. And, don’t forget every Monday is The Big Bingo Show, Tuesdays are Bar Wotever and this Wednesday (3 July) is Kings of Clubs. And on Thursday it’s… Belinda Carlisle… Yep, we said Belinda Carlisle! Kiss My Genders

Kiss My Genders is a group exhibition that’s on now and until September at the Hayward Gallery on the Southbank, celebrating more than 30 international artists whose work explores and engages with gender identity. Working in a wide range of mediums these artists share an interest in articulating and engaging with gender fluidity, as well as with non-binary, trans and intersex identities. Rupert Street goes pink for Pride

For many, many people the gorgeous Rupert Street Bar in Soho is the literal cornerstone of their Pride in London and this year they are promising us their campest one yet. Next Saturday (6 Jul) they will be dressing head to heels in pink – glorious, shocking, gorgeous PINK! They will be open all day, with extra bar points, mega friendly bar peeps, DJ Tasty Tim from 8pm, and did we mention the theme is… PINK!

Felix is at Sundowners

This Saturday (29 Jul) last year’s Drag Idol champ, the amazing Felix Le Freak will be packing their bucket and spade and heading to the seaside. They are of course heading to the always bonkers Sundowners in Margate for more cabaret shenanigans and big bad laughs.

Sweatbox Mondays 

This time of year can be expensive, but those gorgeous chaps at Sweatbox are here to help. Every Monday all under 25s with valid ID get free entry to the West End gym and sauna from 10am until midnight.

Go West at Gunnersbury Park Museum

Next Friday (5 Jul) is Go West, the first LGBTQ+ late night event at Gunnerersbury Park Museum, Popes Lane, W5. The event runs from 7pm and features performers including ShayShay, That Ray, Liv Wynter, a tribute to Freddie Mercury by Lick Von Dyke, and is hosted by Marsha Mallow. There’s also tarot readings by Shy Charles, a pop-up exhibition about LGBTQI migrants, an LGBTQ+  history pub quiz and music from the Unskinny Bop DJs. Pride at Ku

There’s nowhere quite like Ku on Pride Day next Saturday (6 Jul), with all the venues rocking our world in their own sexy styles. At Lisle Street they are going all ‘rainbow-y’ and turning their whole terrace into a beach styled riviera with all sorts of beers and bubbles served all day in their window display. At Little Ku on Frith Street in the heart of Soho there’s a line-up of five leading DJs and go-go dancers in those big windows. You can get more cocktails in The Light Lounge, more shots in She Bar and more DJs in Ku Lisle Street and the Klub with added sparkle and fun across all the venues.

Cabaret madness at Halfway

There’s another glittering weekend ahead at Halfway II Heaven, starting on Friday (28 Jun) with both Charlie Hides and Tanya Hyde. Saturday is packed with Mary Mac, Rose Garden, Miss Terry Tour and The Vixens and Sunday belongs to who else but CK. And don’t forget Halfway II Heaven is the venue closest to Trafalgar Square (it’s actually next to it) on Pride Day and is fit to bursting with a dynamite cabaret line-up, with doors open at midday next Saturday (6 Jul). Seriously queen, it’s not Pride unless you’ve been to Halfway.

There’s a whole amazing day of Pride gorgeousness on offer from Alan, Nieko and the entire team at Circa and Hungerford House. Pride at Above The Stag

There’s more on than usual at Above The Stag for Pride, with two extra shows added to the main productions. Opening this week is Boy Toy in the Studio theatre and next week on Wednesday (3 Jul) is Closer to Heaven. But they also have Happily Every Poofter on 1 and 2 July and from Sunday 7 July, James Barr is back with Thirst Trap until 23 July. Tickets from abovethestag.com

Pride in London is a great excuse for dressing a tad flamboyant, but those kind souls at the Duke of Wellington have added an extra level of magic to the day itself, Saturday 6 July. Their Pride theme this year is Superheroes.
