Steve Budd asked some couples about what brought them together and this 60 minute show, written by him, is the result of those conversations.
This is very coherent observational comedy, delivered with an irrepressible charm that is also very diplomatic and at times intriguing. Budd is a confident performer switching between characters, including the change in accents and body language, with ease. He also has a very natural animated rhythm to the way he gets points over, married to the very clever use of Frank Sinatra and Michael Bublé snippets of songs that also reinforce his message. He examines issues of tolerance, acceptance, and regardless of sexuality, couples face the same challenges on a daily basis. By adding comedy moments into his monologue, Budd seemed to share a kindred spirit with those he spoke with whilst on the quest to fulfil his own desires.
I throughly enjoyed this, mainly due to the fact that I agreed with everything he said about sustaining a relationship. Smart stuff! Budd openly admits that sometimes people, including himself, need help when on the road to love and happiness. What They Said About Love is directed by Mark Keyward and developed with David Ford.
