Henry Miller Fine Art is celebrating male beauty in a new exhibition.
Founded four years ago, Henry Miller Fine Art is the only gallery in the UK specialising in the male form. With a collection ranging from 17th Century paintings to contemporary photography, there is something for all tastes and budgets and their now (in)famous exhibitions have become staples of London’s art and gay social calendar. The next exhibition at the Coningsby Gallery in the heart of Fitzrovia (16-21 September) will feature curated highlights from what is a very extensive collection. We asked Henry to pick his top 5 hottest pieces in the show.
Arthur Tress. Feathers (c.1980).
Tress is an American photographer known for his staged surrealism and re-enactments of homosexual desire, as in this picture that is both sexy and artistically beautiful.
Brian Stonehouse. Young Man with Bandana (c.1970).
More famous for his 1950’s female fashion illustrations for the likes of Vogue and Harpers Bazaar, Stonehouse was also very good at painting men. This young guy is both very 1970s while also being very now.
Patrick Sarfati. In Memory of James Dean (1982).
Sarfati is a French photographer who has worked with many gay icons including Keith Haring, Grace Jones and Jean-Paul Gaultier. This image is so sexy. You can’t really go wrong with a model that merges James Dean with Querelle.
Ronald Bowen. Jeune Homme Assis (1981).
Bowen is an American painter who emigrated to Paris in the 1960s, still working from his studio in Montmartre. He is a master of hyper realism and this particular piece is a superb pencil drawing, extraordinary in both style and size (138cm x 107cm!).
Ian Cook. Pierre (2017).
A graduate of Glasgow School of Art, Ian Cook’s nudes tend to generally be on the more abstract spectrum. Pierre is definitely recognisably male, maybe due to his being so well endowed.
