Meet the stars of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK

It’s been talked about for the past decade, but it’s finally here, on Thursday 3 October RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Series One launches on BBC3, via the BBC iPlayer. Here’s a quick look at what we can expect.

Unless you’ve been hiding out in a cave… on Neptune, you will know that RuPaul’s Drag Race has been one of the biggest cultural phenomena of the past 10 years. The hit US show has helped to bring drag out into the mainstream and along the way has made stars of many of the contestants as well as RuPaul himself and head judge Michelle Visage, both of whom will be on the UK show. The US show has a definite style, high glamour and bitchy laughs and although hugely popular hasn’t been without controversy, but there’s no doubt it has given many elements of queer culture some major visibility.

A few weeks ago the UK line-up was finally revealed after months of speculation and although there was some disappointment that there were no drag kings or female performers there’s been wide spread approval that it’s a strong first season.

Some of the queens are well known to us here at Boyz, Baga Chipz, Sum Ting Wong, Vinegar Strokes, Divina De Campo, Cheryl Hole and The Vivienne have all featured in the magazine and we are looking forward to getting to know, Blu Hydrangea, Crystal, Gothy Kendoll and Scaredy Kat as the series progresses.

We are fascinated to see exactly what the British version will be like and what will Ru, Michelle and a host of guest judges make of our girls?

You can watch the show on the BBC iPlayer every Thursday from 8pm, but why not rock up to one of your favourite venues and watch it with a drink in your hand surrounded by other fans? The Two Brewers, Ku Bar, Halfway II Heaven and more will be showing it at 8pm, and keep an eye on archive.boyz.co.uk for more information.
