Contemporary queer artist Felipe Chavez from Colombia has a new exhibition ‘The Hollow Man’ at The Lighterman bar and dining room in Kings Cross.
Felipe Chavez’s new exhibition ‘The Hollow Man’ offers a fresh take on masculinity. Chavez has created a sea of organic, almost anthropomorphic shapes that pay homage to the tangible aspects of the masculine entity. Inspired by knuckles, muscles, hair and other bodily elements, his isolating of man’s physical characteristics reveals what Felipe admires in the human body and poses a challenge to our assumptions of what makes a physical man.
The exhibition features 17 paintings across all three floors of The Lighterman, a venue with a striking design and a unique waterside location. The exhibition showcases Felipe’s recent artistic exploration of Indian ink on paper combined with his instinctive figurative interest in the human form and how gender and identity may, or may not, be connected to the human experience. Chavez says: “Stepping away from the prevalent bright-coloured visuals of queer art, my black-and-white collection of works are an artistic interpretation of the queer community, which is purer, but just as powerful.”
Chavez is the winner of the Windsor & Newton Product Prize at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour exhibition and of the 2018 Wildlife Artist of the Year in the Urban category. You can find Felipe exhibiting at Roy’s Art Fair in October. He is represented by 508 Gallery in Chelsea.
