Comedy can be a strange animal to conquer but Matteo Lane’s show does precisely that. He is a very funny man with a constant cheeky grin on his face and swishy arm gestures that complete his natural persona of a gay man at the top of his game – and to make a certain point ‘would take no prisoners’.
Lane’s stage presence is strong, masculine and overtly sexy. He talks about women, society in general and his addiction to cooking shows like the Great British Bake Off and of course Trump, and the effect of religious guilt.
His style is infectious and has at its heart a truth to it that comes from using his life experiences, especially growing up in an Italian-Mexican household. He reminisces about his travels in Italy and France which was particularly hysterical and made funnier by a member of the audience coming back with a quip that added to the splendour of the original gag. He has a fondness for life and it shows in his rapid delivery. What Lane achieved with ease was a conversation between him and his audience. Very stylish and modern comedy. Rhys Nicholson was his warm up on the night with his acerbic brand of comedy based on his Australian roots which made for a perfect intro for the main man.
