Cabaret

Cabaret Reporter by Dave Cross

Welcome to this month’s Cabaret Reporter taking a look at stories in the world of drag and LGBT+ cabaret.

Congratulations to the brilliant Mark Anthony who won the first ever Mr Boylesque UK Final held last month at The RVT. Hosted by Lolo Brow this brilliant event saw six amazing acts – Frankly Desire, John Celestus, Mark Anthony, Prinx Silver, Sebastian Angelique and Trash Valentine – compete to be the first winner of this creative competition.

Congratulations are also due to the gorgeous Passionella who won the fabulous It’s a Knockout contest at Halfway II Heaven hosted by Bette Rinse. Passionella won a clutch of big gigs and much more, and follows previous winners such as Poppycock, Felix Le Freak, Ripley and more. Another cool cabaret competition is Gold Rush, hosted by that one woman Country & Western love song Taylor Trash every week at The Glory. And now you can catch up every Sunday from 1pm on YouTube with a special show on the Trash TV channel.

Talking of competitions, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK has proved to be a smash hit on BBC3 iPlayer and with venues such as The Two Brewers, Ku, Halfway, Circa, Rupert Street and more who are hosting viewing parties each week. Later this month you can see all ten girls live and in the flesh on the Drag Race UK tour in London at The Troxy on Friday 29 November, plus dates in Newcastle, Birmingham, Brighton, Glasgow and Manchester. Get your tickets now at vossevents.com.

Sunday Social at The Royal Vauxhall Tavern is always huge fun and on Sunday 1 December they have a special World AIDS Day event that will see both Lola Lasagne and Holestar make their debut on Sundays at the venue with DJ Simon Le Vans and guests.

Most of the stories we heard from Sandra at her recent This Is Your Life celebration at The Two Brewers, are frankly unprintable, but a lot of them genuinely seemed to be set on or around Hampstead Heath, including Kelly Wilde telling us about bringing a set of out of town promoters to London and showing them the Heath, only to be greeted by Sandra emerging from the trees… the whore of Hampstead indeed. There are plans afoot for more This Is Your Life style nights at the venue, stay tuned to find out who will be featured next.

Christmas is not far away and there are several of our favourite scene drag stars appearing in pantos this year. Apart from adult pantos with a definite LGBT theme at Above The Stag, The Two Brewers and The RVT you can see Myra DuBois, Mary Mac, Miss Jason, Dave Lynn, Danny Beard and Cosmic in family shows around the UK.

The team at Brighton Pride have just confirmed the dates and theme for 2020, when they are celebrating an incredible 30 years of Pride. The festival runs from Friday 31 July to Sunday 2 August with the parade and Party in the Park on Saturday 1 August. The theme is Fabuloso and they want everyone to ‘celebrate being you’. You can get more information at brighton-pride.org.

See you next month!
