Christina is the host of the Silent Disco Walking Tours, a unique and really rather fabulous London experience. She shares a birthday with Betty White and once got to film Annie Lennox.
Where are you from?
The best city in the world of course. London born and bred.
And where do you live now?
I live in Ealing with my beautiful Colombian husband. We met on Facebook and have been married for 10 years in December.
Where is your favourite place to spend a day in London?
Me and my best girlfriend always take a “pilgrimage” down the Kings Road in Chelsea. Art, coffee and expensive chocolates.
What’s the idea behind the Silent Disco Walking Disco Tours?
The idea is simple. You chuck on some Bluetooth headphones and I lead you around the streets of Soho while we all sing along to all the campest tunes from RuPaul, Kylie, Rhi-Rhi, Cardi B, Madonna, Katy Perry and many more. You’ll also learn some fun dance routines and be taught the Christina Slut Drip. A lot of people start off quite shy, but by the end the tour everyone has lost their inhibitions and is strutting with the best of us. “I never thought I’d be doing the ‘Spice Up Your Life’ dance routine in Oxford Street, but I did and it was bloody amazing” one guest told me. It’s so much fun hosting the tours that it really doesn’t even feel like a job. I love it and our guests do. This is why we’re the number one tour in the whole of London on Trip Advisor.
Can you tell us some of the places you go on the tours?
We start off at the Marquis of Granby pub in Fitzrovia near to where Lady Gaga was flat hunting, close to where Madonna used to live with Guy Ritchie and catwalk our way into Soho. One of the more poignant places we stop at is outside the Admiral Duncan. We felt this was an important stop on the tour. We then hot foot it through China Town to ‘Everybody was Kung-Fu Fighting’ and do the ‘Time Warp’ upon arrival at Leicester Square. One of my clients described it as “the most fun you could have with your clothes on!”
What was the last film you saw?
The last film I watched was Joker. I have a Masters degree in filmmaking and absolutely love this film. For me it was a masterclass in acting and filmmaking. Extraordinary.
Last play or musical you saw?
It was Dolly Parton’s 9-to-5 the musical. God, I’m so gay. It was a really fun musical and would recommend anyone to go and see it.
What is your guilty pleasure and why?
The Boulet Brother Dragula. The first season was so low budget, but so entertaining. That or singing along to the Spice Girls when no one else is around!
What is your favourite book of all time?
The Twits by Roald Dahl. I love the darkness in this book. I’d love to make this into a film.
What has been the highlight of your career so far and why?
I used to work for the Greater London Authority and one time I got to write for and film Annie Lennox from the Eurythmics for World AIDS Day.
Can you pick four people, alive or dead to invite to a dinner party?
Grace Jones, Betty White (we share a birthday), El Vira and Jimmy Carr. I think it would end up with Grace Jones beating the shit out of Jimmy Carr. I would sit back with Betty and watch the fireworks!
What’s the best party you’ve ever been to and what made it so good?
About 10 years ago I went to the infamous Wig Party at the Café de Paris and had the pleasure of introducing Alexandra Burke to a little-known drag queen called Alexandra Burka. I found it hilarious.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
I know it sounds very cliché but it’s a RuPaul quote: “What you think of me is none of my business”. This is great advice. When you stop worrying about what other people think of you and just be yourself you’ll find you have more time for more creative endeavours.
Who is your LGBT+ hero and why?
Marsha P. Johnson because of her activism in gay rights and the big part she played in the Stonewall riots. We’ve all been the beneficiaries of her actions.
Who are the most entertaining people you follow on social media and why?
I tend to follow lots of makeup tutorials and there is one Australian girl (Courtney Hollins – Centre of Attention Makeup Artistry) that does amazing make-up to the point where she almost looks like a drag queen. By the end of it she looks gorgeous and elegant and then she opens her mouth. The profanities are what makes it worthwhile. Face of a goddess, mouth of filth.
What is one thing you wish you knew when you were younger?
I wish that I knew the full extent of the power of youth when it came to picking men. The ironic thing is you have lower confidence, but higher attractiveness which swaps round as you get older.
