Jinkx Monsoon and BenDeLaCreme are clearly a partnership made in festive heaven. A Christmas duo out to grab the audience’s attention, and that they did with immediate effect. Vivacious, cheeky, extremely whimsical – this was their take on the values of trying to have a Christmas based on tradition, entrenched family values and the fact that a good Christmas can only mean having a row and putting up with family members for thankfully only once once a year – and getting drunk.
This is rib-tickling, rip-roaring in your face comedy. There is a reserved anarchic anger to their execution and through a very amusing series of costume changes. They changed into costumes that depicted the Jewish Star of David and sang a song about Hanukkah with Jinkx’s head dress being a ‘menorah’, a lamp lit to mark the festival of lights, hysterical! Amiably assisted by an elf on or off stage whilst the audience were treated to video playback, this was a Crimbo extravaganza that also looked at the over commercialisation of the whole concept. Jinkx was quick to explain that Christmas came out of Victorian England with a heavy German influence.
Each performer has a fantastic vocal range and with a well honed stage craft and etiquette on display, this was a vibrant, glamorous and wacky look at the Holidays. Jerrick Hoffer and Benjamin Putnam aka Jinkx Monsoon and BenDelaCreme are showmen, superb entertainers and seeing the show made for an ideal early Christmas present. Gloriously camp, spontaneous humour of the highest degree.
