Opening Times: The Two Brewers love Valentine’s Week with the Golden Girls special

The Two Brewers has long been a favourite with boys who like boys – and boys who read Boyz. Daniel Warner caught up with Jimmy Smith, the man who holds the keys to the door of one of the busiest bars in town and asked him if there is anyone who keeps the key to his heart on Valentine’s Day?

Hi Jimmy, it’s good to talk to the big boss of The Two Brewers. What’s going on in the run up to Valentine’s Day, have you got any special events planned?

Hi Dan, as always we have a lot planned here in The Two Brewers. Just like last year we have our Golden Girls the musical coming back with another Valentine’s Day special on Monday 10th, Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th February. You can expect lots of laughs and fun, so it’s definitely one not to miss! Thursday we have something a bit different, an anti-Valentine’s comedy show with Annabelszki in the club and on the 14th (Valentine’s Day, in case you didn’t know!) we have a special comedy night with Lucien Jack in the club bar. It’s also Countdown night with DJ Phil Marriott in the club after and he will be playing all of the love anthems to keep us in a romantic mood. Then if you’re still looking for love, Saturday is our two show night – Poppycock and Tanya Hyde plus all the club hits from DJ Nathan Hickery in the back room and we’ll be finishing off the week with our Sunday favourite Valentine’s Special Power of Four!

Wow! That sounds like a Valentine’s week that’s just bursting with love. Out of the four Golden Girls, who’s your favourite?

Well there’s Rose Garden, Tanya Hyde, Mrs Moore and Stephanie von Clitz and I love all the girls, they do such a great job getting in the character. I don’t think I can choose my favourite, they’re all just amazing and so funny. You will know what I’m talking about when you come and see them!

So out of the original Golden Girls, who are you most like?

I’m the dizzy one, is it Blanche?

No, Jimmy, Blanche was the slutty one, Rose was the dizzy one.

Oh, maybe Rose then? (The answer to this question confirms that Jimmy is indeed, the dizzy one!).

I hear you’ve also got The Steelers Next Top Model coming up, I cannot wait to hear about this.

The rugby boys are not all about sport and muscles, they also like to dress up sometimes! We are bringing back our very popular competition with the Kings Cross Steelers to find their next top model. For one night they dress up, put their wigs and make-up on, jump in heels and show us what other talents they have apart from the one on the field. It’s so much fun! Every time we have the best time, both the contestants and the audience.

Have you got any rugby players you’ve got a bit of a crush on already?

Who doesn’t? Most of the England players are very nice to look at, I think we can all agree on that.

Is there anything else going on at The Brewers you want Boyz readers to know about?

Every year we organise a Lip Sync Battle together with our two sister venues in central London, The Admiral Duncan and Halfway to Heaven as part of the big Stonegate competition. We run separate heats and then meet for the semi-final here at The Brewers and choose the best one to go to represent the LGBTQ+ venues in the big Stonegate final. It’s always so popular and we get so many people applying, so you better hurry up if you want to take part! Come lip sync to any song you want, dance, sing and just have fun!

Finally, let’s go back and talk about romance, tell me who holds the key to your heart and what does it take to impress you on Valentine’s Day?

I will be spending my Valentine’s Day with my partner of many years, he knows best how to impress and surprise me! I am sure we will have a lovely time together like we always do, but I am not giving away any details!
