Henry Miller has a unique collection of fine art of the male body. We spoke to Henry about his passion and his private gallery.
The male form is so in right now. From the Barbican’s Masculinities to The House of Illustration’s Tom of Finland exhibition, London has been getting its fix of naked men and bulges; even Mary Beard was discussing men’s bits in her latest BBC programme Shock of the Nude. Not that we find any of it shocking at all!
Someone who has been at the forefront of the ‘trend’ is Henry Miller, whose eponymous gallery Henry Miller Fine Art specialises in the male form.
With a collection that ranges from 17th Century paintings to contemporary photography and everything in between, Henry knows a thing or two about what makes a good piece of male art.
“I seem to have cornered the market! Amazingly, there is no other gallery in the UK doing what I do.
“I am not bound by any particular time period or style, and my collection is curated thematically and exclusively around representations of the male form, which does allow older and classical pieces to be naturally displayed alongside more contemporary works”.
An avid collector since his teens, the former lawyer turned art dealer regularly exhibits at various art fairs and the Coningsby Gallery in Fitzrovia when not working from his home gallery in Walthamstow which is open by appointment only.
Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus situation, Henry’s latest exhibition has had to be cancelled, but he has made sure that the catalogue is available to view online.
“There are many pieces that people will not have seen before by artists whose work don’t come up for sale very often, including Robert Colquhoun, Duncan Grant, Patrick Procktor, Michael Leonard, David Tindle and Edward Burra.
“So while it is a shame that the show has had to be cancelled, people are still able to browse the catalogue online and they can still contact me for any queries”.
