Beyond ‘There’s Always a Black Issue Dear’ is a documentary film that vividly recalls the memories of growing up black and gay in 1970s and ’80s Britain. The Two Brewers in Clapham is showing the film on Tuesday 27th October followed by a Q&A discussion as part of their celebration of Black History Month.
There’s a unique opportunity to celebrate British Queer Black History with a screening of the multi-award winning Beyond ‘There’s Always a Black Issue Dear’ on Tuesday 27th October. The screening will be followed by a Q & A with Winn Austin (featured in the documentary) and chaired by Daniel Jacob (AKA Vinegar Strokes from UK RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 1) the Q & A also features Mystivyne.
Beyond ‘There’s Always a Black Issue Dear’, explores and celebrates black LGBTQ+ identities in order to demarcate the huge influence that black LGBTQ+ culture has had upon fashion, fine art, dance, music and language, much of which has been appropriated by the cultural mainstream. The cast vividly recall daring to be different from ballet dancing schoolboys, to make-up wearing gender-fluid school days; their experiences shed new light on the UK in the 1970s and 80s.
Creating their own identities at a time when, ‘If you were black you could be either Reggae or Soul’, these are the untold stories of our history. The film spans an era where Soul and Disco, Punks and Blitz Kids met in underground clubs like The Four Aces in Dalston and Crackers in Soho through to the explosion of queer culture at Taboo. Directed, edited and produced by Claire Lawrie, Beyond captures a vital historical period with contributions by Andy Polaris, Frank Akinsete, Kenny Campbell, Kenrick Davis, Velma ‘Vee’ Davis, Lannah P, Les Child, Nicky Green, Robb Scott, Roy Brown and Winn Austin.
Beyond ‘There’s Always a Black Issue Dear’ is showing in The Two Brewers’ Backroom on Tuesday 27th October at 114 Clapham High Street, London SW4 7UJ. Doors open at 7pm, film screening at 7.30pm. Tickets are £4 on Outsavvy, money will be donated to Diversity Role Models. Tickets must be purchased in table groups of 2 to 5.
