Focus on Arthur Tress at Henry Miller Fine Art

Henry Miller Fine Art will be back at the Coningsby Gallery in Fitzrovia from 30 November to 5 December for Henry’s first exhibition of 2020. Henry will also be having an Open House Weekend at his home gallery space in Walthamstow on the weekend of 31 October and 1 November; you can book a visit via the website.

As many Boyz readers know, Henry Miller’s collection focuses on the male form and although it does not exclusively concentrate on gay artists, inevitably given the focus of the works on show, many of them are gay: Keith Vaughan, Duncan Grant, Paul Cadmus and Michael Leonard come to mind.

Some of our favourite works in the collection are by American photographer Arthur Tress whose sexy black and white photographs have brought gay life to the forefront of American culture for the last 50 years.

Known for his staged surrealism and exposition of the human body, Arthur Tress’s work has been exhibited around the world and is part of the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

His images are sexual and theatrical and while he is often compared to Robert Mapplethorpe, he tends to be much gentler and more humorous in his approach to male nudity and gay sexual fantasies. He once said that he doesn’t take himself too seriously, and that a lot of erotic art and literature is actually very funny and playful, like sex itself.

The pictures available from Henry Miller Fine Art, pictured here, certainly bring both a smile to our face and a sense of excitement to our minds.
