DIVA: Live From Hell at The Turbine Theatre – Press night review by Stephen Vowles

DIVA: Live from Hell – music and lyrics by Alexander Sage Oyen, book and characters by Nora Brigid Monahan – is probably one of the highest camp shows I’ve seen this year and starring a very watchable Luke Bayer whose talent is just incredible. His song and dance ability range is brilliant and his stage presence outstanding.

Bayer is just excellent as he is forced to perform at The Seventh Circle, the cabaret club to Hell, after committing a murderous act. He is a cheeky actor and clearly relishing the role.

Bayer delivers big songs, show-stoppers in fact with a highlight being a number called “Strong” which he belts out with a gusto and strength that is breathtaking.

The whole show is full of theatrical references and this just adds to the comedy element of the musical – which had the audience howling as the connection to these references was made.

The whole thing just zips along and Bayer’s control of the different accents and characters he plays is a masterclass in performing, with an intricate script where timing is key.

This is a very fine musical and Bayer’s performance is just superb. He is destined for theatrical glory from Broadway to Battersea. Utterly fabulous!
