Gypsy Queen at the King’s Head Theatre: Press night review by Stephen Vowles

When I first saw Rob Ward’s very entertaining play back in October last year I commented on the fact that the play had an elegance to it and a rhythmic poetic quality that perfectly mirrored the timing, execution and accuracy required by a boxer to deliver at times lethal punches. The play has not changed and has via well crafted direction by Adam Zane become more streamlined and, dare I say it, punchier.

Rob who plays Gorgeous George and his fellow actor Ryan Clayton are perfect together and when they perform various roles, especially Ryan as George’s mother the energy exuded makes for theatre that carries a hard-hitting message. This is a story about sexuality, the brutality of a sport and having to be in total control of your destiny. Absorbing theatre performed with an ease by two actors that have totally connected, As part of the Queer Festival at the King’s Head Theatre in Islington, this study in pugilism and passion for your fellow man will go the distance. Very watchable.
