Ruggercub at The Two Brewers this Friday

Ruggercub is back for another huge party at the Two Brewers this Friday with entertainment from Danny Beard, DJ Demon and more. Here, Social Secretary and 2nd XV Vice Captain, Chris White, gets us in the mood.

For someone who’s never been, how would you describe Ruggercub at the Brewers?

Ruggercub is a monthly club night run by the Two Brewers and the Kings Cross Steelers to help us raise funds for the rugby club. The night promises some fun run by the Kings Cross Steelers such as Steelers Next Top Model, Take Me Out or Steelers Drag Race, and it promises rugby boys, great cabaret, amazing DJs and a really friendly atmosphere.

Can you give us a breed history of the Kings Cross Steelers?

The Kings Cross Steelers is the world’s first and oldest gay-inclusive rugby club, established in November 1995. We’re now in our 22nd season, regularly putting out four full times to compete and in June will be taking five teams to the Bingham Cup (the Gay Rugby World Cup) in Amsterdam. We have players of all abilities and have grown massively over the last few years. I joined in the 14/15 season when we sometimes struggled to field a 2nd XV.

How did Ruggercub come about?

Ruggercub came about as one of our most involved members, the late Wayne Richards, worked with the amazing team at the Two Brewers to start a monthly club night for rugby boys and their admirers. We owe the success of the night to Wayne’s hard work and the constant support we receive from the Two Brewers.

Is there such a thing as a typical Ruggercub?

No, there’s no typical Ruggercub. We try to do different things all the time in order to keep it exciting – the only common things are the amazing venue and atmosphere, the Steelers and the cabaret.

You are starting early this Friday with your own Drag Race, can you tell us what is going to happen?

The Steelers’ Drag Race includes eight rugby boys from the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and pathway teams. We have a great night planned with some great judges – Sum Ting Wong and Miss Mini Bar – and some lip sync battles. Find us on Facebook under KingsCrossSteelersRFC for more information.

Rugger cub is at the Two Brewers, 114 Clapham High Street, SW4.

Entry for Steelers Drag Race is £5 before 10pm, £7 after, includes Ruggercub.
