Fresh Off The Bloat with Margaret Cho at the 02 Academy: Review by Stephen Vowles

Margaret Cho is an immensely talented actress and comic and her high octane show is based on her personal experiences linked to acute social observation. Trump was immediately ridiculed and to be fair, so was Hilary Clinton. She was glad to be in London and away from what she described as the ‘weirdness of America’. She has long been the champion for gay causes and also challenges stereotypes but at the same time mocking the perceived values her own class and ethnicity.

She talks about the power of women, although she can’t resist mentioning Melania Trump. She has a sincere, very low opinion of the First Lady. At times Cho’s comedy is vulgar especially when she talks about bodily functions. She is also a very powerful exponent of the fact that all human beings are to be respected. When she talks of rape, drug abuse and even sexuality and her time in rehab her individual style and speed of delivery does not falter and was clearly being lapped up by a very loyal audience made up of many fans.

This is brash comedy, even cutting edge and would not be to everyone’s taste. I respect her as an original and the fact that she has made her own mark in the world of comedy, garners her the praise she deserves.
