On Sunday night we enjoyed a brilliant show from the lovely Rebecca Ferguson at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire that could be described as sensual, seductive, sexy and even sassy.
She has a gorgeous soft quality to her voice and an effortless command of the stage, emphasised on the night by the beautiful swishing of her gown as she moved around. The set list was made up of songs from all four of her albums, but with more from her recent and excellent Superwoman album. She teased her captivated audience with riffs and chords that showcased her flawless vocals. Teach Me How to be Loved, from her first album also showcased her skill as a lyricist. Other highlights included an emotional rendition of her self penned track Shoulder to Shoulder, that she admitted was a difficult song for her to sing as it came out of a period in her life that was painful. Her spoken links between songs were minimal, but this added to the power of the performance where seamless blending of her songs worked superbly.
The show also included some perfectly chosen cover versions, including a mesmerising performance of Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You and the Creedence Clearwater Revival/Tina Turner class Proud Mary, which brought the audience to its feet.
The word ‘unique’ is used all too often in these days of hyperbole but in the case of Rebecca Ferguson it’s totally apt and justified.
