The new Above The Stag is a Beautiful Thing
Above The Stag is the UK’s only full time LGBT+ theatre company and has almost a decade of hit shows plus a clutch of Boyz Awards to show for it. Last weekend it closed the doors on its home on Miles Street where it has been for the past five years – but fear not, culture lovers, because on Friday 1 June it will reopen at its brand new and much larger new home on the Albert Embankment. The first show in its new home will be the 25th anniversary production of the classic and much loved gay love story Beautiful Thing by Jonathan Harvey.
With hilariously memorable supporting characters and a summery soundtrack of Mama Cass songs, Beautiful Thing is a tender and optimistic play about two damaged boys and the love that heals them. Since premiering at the Bush Theatre in 1993, Beautiful Thing has established itself as a modern classic and was made into a much-loved, groundbreaking film.

Duckie’s community work
Those clever boys and girls and others at queer hotspot Duckie are not just pretty faces and dab hands at running cool pop parties, they also work hard at giving something back to the community at large. Their projects include The Posh Club, a weekly social and showbiz event for swanky senior citizens, elegant elders and glamorous golden girls. The Slaughterhouse Club is a participatory arts project for homeless and vulnerable Londoners struggling with booze and addiction issues, and Duckie QTIPOC Collective is a creative participatory performance project and a youth theatre for working class LGBTQI* young people aged between 18 and 26 from BAME backgrounds. Eurovision Final with Emmelie de Forest
The Eurovision Song Contest is on Saturday 12 May and one of the best parties looks like the Eurovision Final at Star of Kings near Kings Cross. Hosted by Tia Kofi from The Vixens and Sum Ting Wong, it will feature a live screening of the TV show and a live performance by the amazing Emmelie de Forest who actually won the contest in 2013. Cabaret at The Old Ship
This weekend there’s a couple of real favourites on the stage at the Old Ship in Limehouse, with Saucy Sophie on Saturday (28 Apr) and the always bonkers Mandy Gap on Sunday.
Busy Lady Bingo at The Welly
If your idea of fun is shouting “house!” at the top of your voice while an Australian superstar shakes her balls, then head to the Duke of Wellington every Tuesday night where you will find Sheila Simmonds hosting Busy Lady Bingo from 8pm.
