We first glimpse cabaret sensation Reuben Kaye in the shadows, caught in the beam of a pale spotlight as he explains, this is not the start of his show, he was just getting ‘in the mood’.
Then like a man possessed he explodes onto the stage with a breathtaking exuberance. Reuben is gloriously extravagant and flamboyant, and with the flutter of his enormous eyelashes he is off and running. A force of a nature, a cabaret whirlwind with an affectionate nod to the Master of Ceremonies in Cabaret, he is clearly a lover of decadent behaviour influenced by Isherwood’s Berlin. His vibrant wit is showcased as he talks about about social issues and sexual identity, switching between comedy and tragedy with ease. This was a memorable night of hilariously wicked entertainment from a class act. Most definitely worth a view.
