The publicity poster for this musical celebration at the Soho Theatre claims that ‘no show is safe’, which is true, but A Night at the Musicals is a totally affectionate homage to the genre from two fantastic performers.
Both Woo and Gateau were stunning, with their impressive vocal talents showcasing a rare dedication to their craft. The mix of beautiful voices and masterful comedy links made for laugh out loud entertainment. We were treated to show-stoppers from Phantom, Chess, Grease, Little Shop of Horrors and more which pleased a crowd who loved being encouraged to sing-along. Jonny Woo went into full Sally Bowles mode, including classic bowler hat and a gentlemen from the audience and made a selection of songs from Cabaret his own. Le Gateau Chocolat, complete with wind machine made Let it Go from Frozen totally his own. The body language between the two showcased their performance talents where no more than a glance was needed. The build up to the Beauty and Beast finale was riotous with both of them coming into the darkened audience and getting people to illuminate them by the lights from their phones, it was very funny and atmospheric. The show is wonderfully silly, but at its heart are two fabulous entertainers, with amazing voices that just love what they do and you can only love them for that.
