Teenage drag star Athena Heart, aka Castle High School pupil Lewis Bailey, may have made his first major LGBT appearance at Brighton Pride the weekend previous, but The RVT was in fact the first LGBT venue to book him following reports that his school has banned him from performing in drag at his end of year talent show.
Athena had been working on her RuPaul’s Drag Race-inspired routine for weeks, and so for her appearance at The RVT it seemed fitting for Drag Race Season 9 star and friend of Boyz, Charlie Hides, to welcome Athena to the stage. Both acts blew the crowd away with their performances, and with commercial house and dance anthems coming thick and fast from the Sunday Social residents, last Sunday afternoon was the stuff young LGBT dreams are made of.
