Guy The Musical is a fabulous mix of electric, synth-pop, punk, funk, rap, disco and high energy that will blow your socks off. It’s the story of Guy, who just wants to be a ‘guy’ like everyone else. The whole cast are in tune with the material, but especially Brendan Matthew as Guy, who brings the whole thing together. He has a beautiful falsetto voice with a delicacy to his range that really makes the most of the songs. The musical is the story of four men who use a social app for casual hook ups, friends and possible lovers. This show looks at the fakers and fraudsters you get on apps, including ‘catfish’ who use someone else’s photo on their profiles regardless of the consequences. We meet the guys that are so narcissistic they are just plain rude and every other gay man in-between; gym bunnies, geeks, twinks and drag queens. Brendan is superbly supported by Seann Miley-Moore as Aziz, Adam Bradley as Joe and Dom and a wonderful Steve Banks as Tyler who falls foul of a catfish, his skill in switching between the various roles to drive the plot is very funny. This is also a social commentary, touching on cyber bullying, rejection, driven desires, the need for acceptance, passion and just having somebody in your life. With book and lyrics by Leoe Mercer and music and production by Stephen Hyde, Guy The Musical deserves to be given a much larger platform. Excellent, relevant entertainment that will pull on your heartstrings and lifts the lid off the perils of using social apps. Gorgeous.
