Canoe is a stunning one-man show written and performed by Matthew Roberts that tells a tragic story of a canoeing accident resulting in the death of two children, Samantha and Kevin. Roberts is passionate and very convincing as he tells the story of this terrible tragedy. In this 50-minute tour de force Roberts plays the roles of David and Tom, partners who, via surrogacy, had the two children, and this allows him to explore the range of emotions you would expect after being dealt such a cruel hand.
He is a masterful storyteller relishing the power of words as he delivers his message that everyone is worthy of love. This is an incredible look at dealing with the loss of life and grief and it pulsates with a raw energy that is totally mesmerising. Director Struan Leslie’s empathy with Roberts is clear in this powerful piece. Gripping stuff!
