Christmas Queens at the Troxy: Review by Stephen Vowles

After the huge success of Werq the World last year and this year’s offering of Christmas Queens it is easy to recognise why RuPaul’s Drag Race holiday spectacular tour has become such a phenomenal success. Christmas Queens hosted by Bob the Drag Queen and featuring various season winners and contributors Asia O’Hara, Blair St Clair, Eureka O’Hara, Kameron Michaels, Manila Luzon and Sharon Needles had the packed house at the Troxy in London’s East End in a frenzy of delight and admiration for these ladies as they strutted their stuff.

With all of them having individual numbers, with a large video screen behind them, the girls either lip synced for their lives or actually sang with banter in between. Last year was more of a clubbing experience, this year it was a seated affair which give the ambience in the room a more theatrical vibe. There was a good mix of styles from big band, jazz, disco funk to country and R&B. With intricate choreographed numbers and high glamour, this was a total schmaltz fest. A true Christmas delight as the RuPaul stars successfully transferred from the TV show to performing live on a very large stage. Christmas Queens is a delight with exceptionally high production values.
