Cabaret

I heard a Rumour: Rumour Mill on Friday and Monday at Our/London Vodka Distillery

Rumour Mill is the exciting and original new cabaret show with an edge that is happening this Friday and Monday at the gorgeous London Vodka Distillery in Hackney, complete with an extraordinary selection of burlesque and boylesque performers. Dave Cross spoke to the woman behind this exciting concept, choreographer and creative director Claira Vaughan, to find out what’s behind the sparkling curtain.

Hi Claira, how would you sum up what Rumour Mill is?

Rumour Mill is a revue show, combining burlesque, boylesque, gender-bending, slick choreography and high skill circus sprinkled with a hell of a lot of fabulousness, making it a cabaret, but not like you’ve seen it before.

An ‘anything goes’ night that will have you up dancing all night.

Can you tell us about the venue?

The venue is the gorgeous Our/London Vodka Distillery hidden under the arches in Hackney. This glorious venue has two fabulous bars and an exposed distillery, providing the backdrop to the evening.

This weekend you have two parties, Friday and Monday, can you talk us through the acts performing?

The performers change for every Rumour Mill show. For our Xmastravaganza show we are thrilled to announce the following: Classic burlesque superstar, Miss Betsy Rose, who is one of London’s most prestigious performers and a key figure on the international burlesque scene, dazzling audiences on every continent around the globe. We have gender-bending master of mime, Pi The Mime, international award-winning clown and cabaret artist, who combines mime, drag, dance and theatre to make the audience, laugh, cry and feel. Didi Derriere has the looks of a young Madonna and this blue eyed beauty brings a theatrical jazzy twist to a classic style of burlesque, her Vogue act will have you believing Madonna is in the room. We also have acrobatic duo Deux Ailes who combine grace, style and gravity-defying agility both in the air and on the ground creating breathtaking routines that have dazzled audiences in cabarets across the world.

They sound amazing and who else?

There’s Cyr wheel and high skill circus brilliance from Billy George. The Cyr wheel performed in the intimate setting of Rumour Mill is something not to be missed! Olivia Fines is a London-based bombshell actor and musical theatre performer with enough sass to fill an arena and more ability than Gloria Estefan, to get people ‘on their feet’. Plus Gianni Ariancio, a London based commercial dancer and musical theatre performer; oozing with sex appeal and talent, Gianni’s act has every jaw on the floor and there’s hand balance genius Aaron Marshall who can balance a rose on his nose whilst spinning on his head. An incredible skill and also very nice to look at! And the glue that sticks this masterpiece together is our utterly brilliant ringmaster, Mr Joe Morose. The bastard lovechild of Peter Pan and Dot Cotton, he has the body of a child and the mind of a gin addled old lady.

These are your Xmastravaganza parties, what festive extras can we expect?

Rumour has it, you can expect a naughty little elf, Marilyn sitting under the mistletoe, swooning and crooning from international jazz duo ‘Dukebox!” and mulled wine and hot Baileys shots – along with all the fabulous Rumour Mill performers. Oh and both bars and DJ till 1am – but shhhh you didn’t hear that from me…

How much are tickets and how do people get them?

Tickets are £16 for early birds and £20 thereafter for 7pm – 1am. Tickets can be purchased via our website rumourmill.org.uk or via designmynight.com

And, finally what else do we need to know?

A night at Rumour Mill is carefully choreographed, getting every detail just right. The service is as slick as the dancers and if the music doesn’t get you on your feet, the Espresso Martinis will. A place to socialise, enjoy the atmosphere, dance to great music, drink fabulous cocktails and of course enjoy one of the best shows in town.
