Glenn Chandler has created a charming look at relationships and redemption with The Boy Under The Christmas Tree, a play that he also directs. This is a 75 minute festive frolic linking themes from A Christmas Carol with its three visitations, and an affectionate nod to the comedy of Joe Orton. Chandler has created a petulant character in Lawrence Bennett, played by a very watchable Jamie Loxton, who wakes up one morning to find The Boy, played by a very charismatic Daniel Grice, under his tree. How did he get there? And so the plot unfolds. Brisk acting from all concerned especially Sam Sheldon as he tackles head on the multiple roles of the nosey, sexually repressed neighbour Doctor, the Policeman with a warped fascination with asphyxiation, an alcoholic Santa and lastly Lawrence’s forlorn lover Brandon. This is also a delightful comedy of manners; a sharp look at class and snobbery. Chandler is a keen wordsmith and with The Boy Under The Christmas Tree he has created an intriguing piece of modern theatre weaving into the piece the importance of having morals and honour. Clever stuff. Definitely worth a view this seasonal holiday.
