Next Sunday (3 Feb) is the launch of a new innovative monthly party at the Boyz Award-winning Royal Vauxhall Tavern. Mother’s Best is brought to us by Argyris and Dan from Beefmince and will feature a host of exciting cabaret stars and DJs. Dave Cross met up with the boys to find out what Mother does best.
Hey guys, so in basic terms can you describe Mother’s Best?
The first Sunday of every month Mother’s Best will throw back the stage curtains (and a few bevvies) to showcase the UK’s finest and funniest performers in the iconic grade 2 listed, Royal Vauxhall Tavern. The show is followed by music from some of London’s most talented DJs.
What’s the idea behind the name?
The Royal Vauxhall Tavern has a fiercely loyal following across all the brilliant nights that run there and people often refer to the Tavern as one big, slightly twisted family – for many The RVT feels like home. We wanted to capture this in the name of our event. For us, when it comes to Sundays, Mother should be in her element. Whether it’s the Sunday roast with her infamous roasties or glamming herself up wearing her Sunday best. Mother always knows best and it’s traditionally her day of the week to shine! And for Mother Tavern that means bringing the best the UK has to offer into this legendary building to her loving family. It’s Mother’s Best!
How will the night run?
We’ll be swinging the doors of the Tavern open at a very civilised 3pm with the show starting around 5pm followed by DJs until 10:30pm.
Who are the key members of the team?
So aside from ourselves we’ll also have Miss RVT herself, Pippa, on the door. We already run Beefmince at the Tavern, so Mother’s Best is quite a side step from our usual Friday club night, but we are super excited to start this adventure with the fabulous team at the Tavern.
You launch on 3 February, can you tell us about your two cabaret stars?
We are super excited and honoured to be able to launch Mother’s with these two stars – Tracy La Bouche (nee Barlow) and Dusty Limits. Expect Dusty Limits to sing songs that lurch from bawdy hilarity to vicious social satire. Twisted, bitter, cynical and hilarious, he is everything your parents warned you about. Ex-convict (now a proud born-again Christian), outrageous and sensational Tracy will deliver absurd comedy, as well as musical performance. Both are very different but also strangely similar. We want to bring a variety to Mother’s Sundays and these two tick the boxes perfectly.
And the DJs, what will the music be like?
It is on a Sunday, so we want to steer away from turning the Tavern into a club. We plan to keep things light and poppy. Our first guest DJ is Johnny Kalifornia. He is a well known DJ in the London scene and works on BBC Radio 2’s Sounds Of The 80s! He will be serving you the finest selection 80s, 90s and current uplifting pop tunes. After Johnny, Silverhook, Mother’s resident DJ will take over; he will serve you his delicious 80s infused electro-pop and other popular treats.
What can we expect going forward?
We’ve been busy speaking to performers and DJs for the last few months now and have a fabulous line-up to bring to Mother’s. Some will be familiar with The RVT and some will have never have stepped on the stage before. All to be revealed in the next coming months.
