Nathan Wright, whose debut play this is, wrote this wonderful comedy of manners – also playing the central role of drug dealer Al – and has hit gold by doing meticulous research. Wright’s understanding of the human spirit and the blending into his marvellous script of profound personal experiences means finer theatre would be hard to find.
This stunning four-hander featuring James Wallwork as Ian, David Whitworth as Terry, James Woolley as scene-stealing Les and writer Nathan Wright playing the aforementioned Al, is a beautiful examination of the power of wisdom realised when you are old; and with that power comes knowledge that entitles you to do whatever you want.
Lilies and Sweets is full of fabulous twists and turns that make for fascinating storytelling. Where classes clash and the youth have a need and desire to learn from their elders. The direction which is very smooth, and done in insightful fashion by Spencer Noll, adds to the charm and intrigue of the power games and the occasional trip down memory lane enjoyed by Les and Terry.
Wright has made it very clear that his characters have agendas and via attributes of being mellow, bitchy, masterful and naughty he brings out the honesty and mutual respect the characters feel for each other. The interaction between the four of them is sublime and totally rubber stamps that friendship is important and it is not what you know but who you know that matters – and who you actually choose to honour, respect and cherish. Absolutely gorgeous!
