A Night At The Musicals with Jonny Woo and Le Gateau Chocolat at Soho Theatre: Review by Stephen Vowles

The first thing to be said about these two performers is that their commitment to their craft is stupendous. They are out to have a good time and take a very appreciative audience along for the ride. Rousing and riotous their delivery of songs from Phantom of the Opera, Little Shop of Horrors, Cabaret, Frozen, Chess and Grease is hysterical and based on a very simple fact – neither of them can control the ‘clown’ aspect of their respective deliveries of their chosen songs. Chocolat in particular, whose voice booms out, is a master of the slapstick body gesture.

These two fabulous artistes also know how to delivery a sight gag – especially where wigs are involved – and their timing is impeccable. Their camaraderie is zestful and poignant and is exemplified by a very tender but at the same time amusing rendition of ‘He Knows Me So Well’ from Chess. These two are bosom buddies and know how to entertain. By throwing into the mix quite a large section with the focus on audience participation as the show drew to a close, they had the audience in their palms. Great fun!
