Tom Wright, the writer of Undetectable, has it so right with his new play. The energy on the stage between the two actors – Lewis Brown as Bradley and Freddie Hogan as Lex – is just breathtaking with both of them in such harmony with each other and in total immersion of their respective characters. It’s spine-tinglingly good. There is also the most sensational direction and design by Rikki Beadle-Blair.
This is very real theatre about two gay men that require love, emotional and physical stimulation. The connection between the two of them is passionate. The agenda that Wright sets out deals with conforming to social stereotypes, stigma, trust, morals, ethics, manipulation, the power of seduction and even subdued confrontation is brought to such a crescendo, it warrants loud cheers as the finale of the play is executed with total and brutal honesty.
Undetectable is performed with such a sense of purpose that this story can only be described as one of the most provocative, evocative and inspired pieces of theatre I’ve seen this season. A true ‘not to be missed’ piece of drama that is so relevant to today. A stunning two hander that is a tender and an uplifting love story for the post-chemsex, PrEP generation vividly brought to life by two actors at the top of their game. Impressive stuff!
