Welcome to the first Cabaret Reporter in the new look Boyz. Each month I’ll be looking at stories of interest across the UK drag and cabaret scene, featuring some acts you may not know, or more familiar ones doing the unexpected.
On Saturday 27 July, a genuine cabaret icon, Terri Fox is making a rare and welcome UK appearance with a special show at The White Swan in Limehouse. She really is one of a kind and this will be something special and very funny, plus there’s even a free drink included in the ticket price… see you there.
Talking of international stars, Boyz’ favourite layover, Pam Ann will be crash landing at The Two Brewers on Thursday 22 August, with a show called Toot Toot Beep Beep, if you’re a big fan of family friendly comedy… do not buy a ticket!
On Thursday 25 July, Miss Jason will be performing in civvies, under the name Jason Sutton in a play by Andrew Kay called Morning Glory at The Two Brewers, the play comes with a warning, ‘may contain nuts’ and we hear great things about both the play and Jason’s performance.
On Monday 29 July, Tia Kofi, one third of the Boyz Award-winning Vixens is back with the next round of her hilarious Weakest Twink quiz at Halfway II Heaven. We went to the first one and loved it.
Jade Justine is a drag act from the Midlands, who we’ve seen in Drag Idol and at Halfway II Heaven and on Friday 2 August she has her own show at The Other Palace Theatre.
Someone else who has their own new show is one time Boyz guest editor, frequent cover star and multi media goddess, Myra DuBois, who will be at the Edinburgh Festival with Dead Funny, complete with brand new original songs.
If you want to experience some new and quite honestly brilliant new cabaret acts, all of which are pushing the boundaries, envelopes and preconceptions of what drag is, then head to The Royal Vauxhall Tavern on Thursday 8 August. Haus of Royalz present their latest showcase, Volcano, a fiery mix of the wild and untamed including FRUIT, Rhys’ Pieces, Eva Wonder, Bae Sharam, Dolly Trolley, Veronica Montenegro, Chlamydia Jones and Frankly Desire who was the winner of this year’s Pride’s Got Talent cabaret contest.
And talking of Pride In London, we had a brilliant time this year and stopped by the Cabaret Stage on Dean Street, which was without doubt the busiest we’ve ever seen it. We caught quite a few acts including Son of a Tutu, #Joe, Stephanie Von Clitz, a whole clutch (is that the right collective noun?) of Pride’s Got Talent alumni, Sum Ting Wong, The Vixens and our old friend Charlie Hides who closed the stage with an impassioned speech about diversity and a rousing version of ‘This Is Me’. From there we dashed back to Trafalgar Square where we were very happy to witness this year’s Drag Idol winner Karla Bear, on the stage. Following an icon like Billy Porter isn’t easy, but our girl wowed the crowd with a huge Disney medley that had thousands singing along. A star is definitely born.
