“One of the highlights of the summer was undoubtedly Brighton Pride and we had a flipping marvellous time. We spent a lot of it lurking in and around the Legends Cabaret Tent in Preston Park on Saturday, organised and hosted by the queen with the gold-plated clipboard and a running order set in stone… Lola Lasagne.
We tried to maintain the lie that we were working, but I suspect that we were having too much fun to be classed as work. Sadly much of what happened behind the curtain is classified and we can’t talk about it, so Mrs Moore, Rose Garden, Mary Mac, Sally Vate you’re all safe, but we did enjoy a cake baked by Martha D’Arthur especially for the day and loved watching Drag With No Name constructing the ‘set’ for his bonkers Kylie tribute, which wowed us and the audience.
Talking of Brighton, on the Sunday many big name acts performed on the special cabaret stage built on the back of a lorry on George Street, all of them without incident… all of them except Pat Clutcher who managed to wander off the edge of the stage in the middle of a song… reportedly she was wearing a new wig supplied by Kara Van Park and it saved her life. Thoughts and prayers.
Congratulations to former Boyz cover star and cabaret sensation Adam All who has just got married to long time partner Apple Derrieres and you can see the happy couple every Wednesday at Ku’s She Soho bar where they host karaoke. If you’re heading to Edinburgh for the last few days of the Fringe Festival we hear that LGBT cabaret scene stars such as Myra DuBois, TV TV, Eileen Bothways, Sooz Kempner, Alfie Ordinary and more includingA Night Without Kate Bush, that we first saw at The RVT, are all having fantastic runs and keep appearing on the famous ‘sold out’ blackboard.
We’ve mentioned it elsewhere, but seriously kids if you want to see a fantastic cabaret competition then head to Halfway II Heaven every Tuesday from 10 September when It’s a Knockout will be back in full force hosted by that force of nature, Bette Rinse and featuring a gaggle of new stars.
Finally good luck to all the nominees in the inaugural QX Cabaret Awards organised by our good friend Jason Reid. There’s a a host of categories covering acts, performers, venues and events of every kind of cabaret you can imagine and the winners will be revealed at a party at Circa The Club on Wednesday 2 October hosted by Son of a Tutu and Michael Twaits.
