Me, Myself and I: John Galea

Singer and pianist John Galea is known as The Piano Man and he’s performed all over the world. He loves rapper Lil Nas X, thinks Las Vegas is like Disneyland for grown ups and has partied with US music mogul Clive Davis.

Where are you from originally?

Great Yarmouth in Norfolk.

And where do you live now?

North London, hopefully with a dog on its way.

Where is your favourite place or places to spend a day in London?

I love spending time in Soho. I lived there for five years before recently moving out so it holds a special place in my heart. The buzz, nightlife and people means it’s a very special place and travelling around the world has shown me there’s nowhere quite like it even now.

How would you describe the music you make?

It’s piano based soulful pop music.

And what is now available via your website?

You can buy music and merchandise, plus there’s tour information and social media links.

What was the last film you watched, and what did you think of it?

On the plane coming back from Las Vegas I watched Bohemian Rhapsody, which was brilliant, not just because of Queen, it was so well put together – I loved it!

Last play or musical in a theatre you saw?

I saw the play, A Girl On The Train at the Duke Of Yorks which was brilliant. I loved the film and it worked really well on stage with Samantha Womack.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Eurovision – I have been a fan since I was 8ish and I love the music, drama and brilliance of it and it just gets bigger and better every year. I do wish the UK could do better but hey its the taking part that counts right?

What is your favourite book of all time?

I don’t have one, I find getting time to sit down and read a book difficult.

What has been the highlight of your career so far and why?

Performing the main stage London Pride after coming out as bisexual, the love and support was so strong. Performing at my local Pride in Norwich this year was just the same – the support from the LGBTQ+ community has also been so amazing.

Can you pick four people, alive or dead to invite to a dinner party?

Mariah Carey, Diane Warren, Mozart, Joan Rivers.

What’s the best party you’ve ever been to and what made it so good?

I’m very lucky I get to go to a lot of good launches and events, but this year’s Grammy party in LA was amazing – the buzz around the Clive Davis party especially was nuts.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Be who you are and never give up. Keep on going!

Who is your LGBT+ hero and why?

At the moment It’s American rapper Lil Nas X – what he’s done for the LGBTQ+ community is brill. It’s a huge big step for a Rapper to come out and the success and love and support that’s he’s been given is huge beacon around the world. He’s very talented and I have massive respect for him.

Who are the most entertaining people you follow on social media and why?

There’s so many from singers to models to influencers – here are a few who keep me going with their crazy antics Stylist@ldweedon, Influencer@james_maximilian, @drpritchard.

Where is your favourite place in the whole world?

Anywhere in the USA but especially Las Vegas – It’s like a grown up Disneyland and I have been very lucky to have seen so many amazing artists live, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, Diana Ross and more.

What is one thing you wish you knew when you were younger?

That there’s nothing better to be than just yourself and not let anyone’s judgement or opinions darken your light.
