Cabaret

Dave Lynn with Sunday Roast cabaret at The Curzon, Rock Street, Brighton: Review by Stephen Vowles

Dave Lynn is a pure master of his craft. His repertoire of songs and his ability to work the room and hold an audience’s attention is extraordinary. No one dares talk when this man is singing. Lynn does the reverse heckle and tells them to respect his talent and rightly so. The legendary performer creates an electric atmosphere – which along with the vibe the venue already has thanks to the owners Tom and Daniel – means he cannot fail to entertain.

Dave Lynn’s rapport with the crowd comes with ease and is so natural. His well tuned vocal range is on full display hitting his notes in his own inimitable style. Lynn is a class act whether performing in a bar or a major theatre, he excels. From the songs “New York New York” to “Copacabana” via “That’s Life” he knows what his audience want to hear. So from Liza via Dusty and Dolly and Shirley he belts them out , seldom pausing for breath. His encores are “Diamonds Are Forever” and the Jewish folk song “Hava Nagila” which has almost become his signature tune. . . and after performing that song it is very easy to see why people rejoice in this talented artist’s ability to entertain.

Within the Curzon they have entertainment on seven nights a week across their Cabaret Bar, new 70 seat theatre and vintage in-house cinema as well as three garden areas. Every Tuesday is Camera and Quiz night with Cosmic 8pm, Wednesdays are Open Mic night with Dragon and on Sunday, the Dave Lynn Sunday Roast show. On Fridays and Saturdays there are two shows  at 8.30pm and then 10pm with up and coming performances from Maisie Trollette on 4th June, Topsie Redfern on 11th June, Cosmic on 18th June  and Fonda Cox on 25th June. Further dates for your diary are Lucinda Lashes on 5th, Davina Sparkle on 12th and Sandra on 19th.

In the theatre will be productions of The Seagull and The Haunting of Hull House and Topsie Redfern with the Crystal Balls Show between the 23rd and 25th June. Something for all tastes in a venue that proves that live entertainment is not dead in this charming venue in Brighton. Pre-booking and reservations are highly recommended.
