The reason why Dave Lynn is such a drag superstar is because like his contemporaries – Dame Julie Paid, Sandra, Miss Jason and of course the incredible Maisie Trollette – he knows what works and what does not. Lynn is a slick entertainer and knows how to work a room with such ease. It’s just fabulous to watch even to the point that when on occasions a member of the audience gets on his nerves he has the power and grace to basically tell them to go away or, let’s get real, a more explicit adjective is heard.
Lynn is adored and rightly so as he sparkles and shimmers in what is a fabulous gown. His repertoire is huge but at The Old Ship on Saturday 11th June, it was a selection of medleys that had the room cheering and applauding as he encouraged a British Bulldog spirit in this Jubilee year.
From Cabaret to “Copacabana”, to “Nobody Does It Like Me”, through to Doris Day, Dusty Springfield and a wonderful rendition of the songs from Lionel Bart’s Oliver, these are easily recognisable and as Lynn moved his microphone up and out the audience gladly joined in the choruses.
His line in patter and banter between songs is also funny with a strong emphasis on his Jewish heritage and even on his early school days. With an actual costume change done on stage to reveal a glittering Union Jack frock Lynn’s sense of patriotism is fuelled by a trip down memory lane in nostalgia as he performed songs made famous by Vera Lynn which clearly demonstrated how polished Lynn is.
Marvellous to watch and hear such a gifted performer who just excels at what he does. Lynn is a true master of his craft.
