Cruise at the Apollo Theatre: Press night review by Stephen Vowles

It’s seldom the case but a revival can often fail due to the excellence that was achieved by the original production. This is not the case with Jack Holden’s sublime and very modern one-act play. He has made the play larger, broader, introduced some new characters and used the vastness of the Apollo Theatre’s stage to great visual effect.

The set by Nik Corrall is just fabulous, turning on itself and with the lighting cues designed by Prema Mehta, all add to an atmosphere so evocative of Soho of the 1980s, neon bright and seedy.

Director Bronagh Lagan has gotten a performance out of Holden that is stunning to see unfold, especially as the play develops and the matter of HIV and AIDS is brought into the story. Holden has a gazelle quality to him that is magnificent. His play is a one-man execution in perfection by an actor so in tune with this passionate and emotional ride and the energy it takes to ‘go there’.

Pure class and with support music composed and performed by John Patrick Elliott, the two pieces of this engaging jigsaw of the age are locked together. Do not miss this Olivier-nominated award performance for best new play. Totally thought-provoking!
